Problem: Disengaged Men. Solution: Human Sacrifice

NO. JUST NO. Here in this Charleston City Paper article we have someone traveling to India thinking that society might provide a culture to be emulated to address the problem of disaffected young men in our society. Young American men today do have problems and too often don’t find a satisfying place in society. However, women aren’t causing those problems. Certainly the solution is not to emulate a culture that traditionally and, too often still, devalues women, a society in which honor killings are still a problem. The solution is not to make beating up women psychologically and economically, and sometimes physically, great again.

Some among us, including some with a great deal of power, want women to make up for the damages that a shifting economy and society inflict. It is argued that women should be submissive tools to reassure young men, when what those men actually need is reliable employment in a context that treats them with basic respect, not as disposable tools. They need a community where even their votes are not diluted to serve the interests of people in power, where their voices are not ignored by political figures looking out for themselves. Too many of the people with economic and political power don’t want to provide any of that, so we have the demand that women provide comfort by allowing these frustrated young men to dominate and control them.

This is a solution that works nicely for employers like Amazon, with its plan to replace hundreds of thousands of workers with robots and AI. Those workers will be financially endangered and often personally devastated. Amazon isn’t going to do anything about that but count the profits and maybe throw a $50 million wedding the next time Jeff Bezos gets married. But, surely they would feel better if they can go home (whatever is left of it) and dominate the women in their lives. Pretty rotten for women though, to be treated as human sacrifices to paper over the problem.
